Infra-communales maps
The infra-communal breakdown of a territory, or the division of communes into "quarters", is typically used as the basic grid when it comes to publishing local data, thus enabling more accurate analysis.

In France, communes with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants and most communes with between 5,000 and 10,000 inhabitants are broken down into IRIS. These islands collated for statistical information purposes are defined by the French statistical office INSEE and constitute clusters of contiguous islands known as "quarters". France contains approximately 16,100 IRIS, 650 of them in the overseas departments. The IRIS 2010 breakdown is available as well as the associated INSEE data pack. |
Certain southern European countries also provide an infra-communal breakdown.

This is especially so for Italy and Spain. Italy’s territory numbers 350,000 sezioni and Spain 35,000 secciones censales.
In order to make the analyses more relevant, a comprehensive offering of socio-demographic data is available on these two countries. Provided by the national statistical institutes, the studies are based on more than 200 major indicators (population, accommodation…), both Italy and Spain, making it possible to perform specific analysis. |
